when did the pc era start? horror has gotten better than in the 90s. tv (or streaming) has gotten better than it's ever been, possibly.
Tough to pinpoint, but I would say in the last decade with it really ramping up in the last couple years. How many public apologies have you seen in the last year?

TV and streaming kinda flip flopped with theaters in terms of being edgy.
okay. the 2010s suffered a little bit, compared to the 2000s as far as horror goes. there have been a lot of public apologies. i don't really pay attention to gossip and celebrity culture. i never have. (well, maybe for a little while in the 90s. :P )

yeah, tv is definitely more edgy than mainstream movies today, in general.

You know, neither Sleepaway Camp nor Silence of the Lambs could be released today because of the killers being trannies.

Name has value. Obviously not theatrical , and if is done by a major, the tranny stuff gets dropped.

Leatherface has been highly sanitized. I can't tell you how Norman is presented because I did not see the show. Norman was more mom obsessed than a trans person. In fact, he was very straight if I recall.

In that film it is integral to it.

Given what we know about many real life serial killers, it does add some authenticity to make them mentally disturbed and gender confused.

agreed. and there are still killers who are mentally disturbed and gender confused. and yeah, it is integral to the angela character.

That is not how trans is defined, though.

And to be clear, I get that most trans people are docile and why they get sick of seeing so many cinematic trans people as either jokes or the most deranged killers possible. I just don't like to see art sanitized in a way that doesn't reflect reality.

no. angela would be considered a trans girl and straight as such. i don't think leatherface or bates would really be considered trans at all. just cross dressers. and buffalo bill was described as something other than trans, in the movie he was in. "his pathology is too severe, too violent" or something to that effect.

how many more trans killers are there now, in reality, than there were in the 80s and 90s? (when sleepaway camp and silence of the lambs were released)

A chunk of the trans community defined Bill as such.

I am not sure what you are asking?

In movies, hyper sexual deviance, which often included trans/gay behavior was quite common up until the Silence of the Lambs backlash.

Kinda like Muslim terrorists in movies faded away after 9/11.

I know one was a movie and the other real life, but the chilling effect on those characterizations are similar.

"sanitized in a way that deosn't reflect reality" <-- so i asked the question.

it was more common in fiction, than it is now. yeah. i agree. and so was muslim terrorism. and before that russian or german baddies. culture shifts. that doesn't mean that there are not still awesome movies to be had.

But isnt it weird to shift away from reality to a PC reality?

Like when you know it is a character put there with a political agenda rather than to best service the story.

we didn't shift away from reality. unless transgender murderers are more common in reality, and that's not being reflected in the fiction? otherwise, i don't understand what you're trying to get at, in the instance.

what characters are put into current fiction that don't best serve the story? give me some examples?
