7.8.18
7.8.18
I just endured watching a group of women fawn over shitty horror movies while talking about how much they *love* the genre. I don't think I've ever backed away from a group of people faster.

Re: 7.8.18
hmm.. what were those horror movies?
Re: 7.8.18
Skeleton Key
The Woman in White
The Babadook
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Silent Hill
The Haunting in Connecticut
Ghost Ship
Insidious
The Purge
All receiving rave reviews and excitedness about how scary and disturbing they were...I rolled my eyes and left. A few of them mentioned actually good horror flicks (from the 80s) and the majority just completely ignored those and went into girl hysterics over how amazing horror is now...just...no.

Re: 7.8.18
while i like some of those, they wouldn't be my first thought when talking about good horror. and it's doing well, nowadays, but the 1970s and 1980s (especially the 80s) will probably never be matched.
Re: 7.8.18
I like some of them too, but good horror? not what comes to mind...largely forgettable actually.
doing well right now is not the same as "So amazing right now!" Just...no.

Re: 7.8.18
how old were they? maybe "horror is so amazing right now" equated to, i'm finding such awesome stuff? though that list doesn't look good in that favor.

Re: 7.8.18
they ranged from mid-twenties to mid-fifties.
That's the thing, the titles they were listing just were not matching the level of excitement. Like, yeah, that's a moderately entertaining movie that I didn't regret watching, but you literally just said it made you cry because you were so scared by it. Seriously?

Re: 7.8.18
Man, the only one that really competes on that list is Insidious, lol.

you should always err on the side of caution when approaching people in real life.

Re: 7.8.18
Obviously, The Babadook's the best on the list by far, no competition.
I did like Skeleton Key (despite the twist) and (surprisingly) The Haunting in Connecticut.
The Purge and Silent Hill didn't do much for me.
Have not seen The Woman in White, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Ghost Ship, or Insidious.

Please tell me you gave them some stank Prince eye as you did it...Dream wrote:I just endured watching a group of women fawn over shitty horror movies while talking about how much they *love* the genre. I don't think I've ever backed away from a group of people faster.

I think I would have bailed too right after Babadook came out of their mouths.*cringes*Dream wrote:Skeleton Key-

Never saw Purge (don't feel the need to), Never saw Ghost Ship, The rest are a mix of okay, decent, meh and forgettable.
Re: 7.8.18
The Babadook GTFO
I would rather stare at dog shit until it aged to white than watch that again. All those movies are average at best.

Re: 7.8.18
Have not seen Purge or Woman in White. Insidious is the best, followed by Ghost Ship, which I dug when I was 14, but has cooled off to "pretty OK" status. I remember next to nothing about Skeleton Key or Silent Hill, the rest are shit.

Re: 7.8.18
ghost ship is probably my favorite, as mentioned before. skeleton key, the exorcism of emily rose, silent hill, insidious were pretty decent too. i haven't seen the rest, or thought they sucked. not gonna mention names to keep from offending jiggy.

Re: 7.8.18
I would guess it is nostalgia to what they were first exposed to. Kinda like my fondness for 70's and 80's horror galvanized my opinions on them. I think it would be just as easy for them to look at many 70's and 80's flicks we consider classics and turn their nose up to them. A good portion of the movies I love could not even be made today for one reason or another.
Re: 7.8.18
i think you're trying to look for some kind of objective standard for judging art and there really isn't one. everyone, and every generation, is going to view it a little bit differently, and have their favorites. but there is more to it, than just nostalgia at the same time.
Re: 7.8.18
Most everything on Dream's list is of a higher production quality than most of the horror I consider to be classic. I think that is a fairly objective standard. Something like The Skeleton Key may not be my taste, but I can certainly see that it was well made.zombie wrote:i think you're trying to look for some kind of objective standard for judging art and there really isn't one. everyone, and every generation, is going to view it a little bit differently, and have their favorites. but there is more to it, than just nostalgia at the same time.
