Advice. When is okay not okay?
SO, I'm a little confused. And I know HMF can be very objective...and I'm not super comfortable going to facebook with this, so bare with me. I just wanna know if I'm wrong.
Some of you may know (this is Alli btw) that I work in the retail business. Exclusivley in the layaway dept of a big box retail store. Today I was helping a patron, when behind him I see a gentlemen in the handicap cart with another man riding the back of it. I also, heard them making remakes about female workers at the store and giving me some looks at made me uneasy. So I go upstairs to get the layaway of the person I'm waiting on...while I'm up there I say quietly over the walkie talkie that there are some men by layaway that look like theyre messing with the handicap cart (because no one can stand on the back of it while someone is riding because theyre like 20 yrs old and tend to break under extreme weights) Apparently, the gentleman riding the cart heard what was said over the walkie...he cornered the manager and started yelling and cussing and saying he was legitmately disabled and he was embarassed that someone called him out because all the employees were looking at him, and he could sue if he wanted. Then said he wanted the name of the person (me) that said it. My manager of course played dumb and stated that she didn't know who made the comment but would find out and talk to them but that she couldn't give out any names. Then he proceded to ask several employees if it was them and continued to curse. At this time I took another layaway to the back called my manager on the phone and said I was uncomfortable.
And when I tried to finish my other duties he continued to glare at me scaring the everylovinshit out of me...i work in the hood...handicapped or not he could stab me im sure.
It mostly stemmed from me being uneasy about the way I was being looked at initally, plus they were going to break our cart so we have to report that. I cant ask ppl if theyre disabled because thats discriminatory too
Ending with them continuing to ask the supervisor for my name until she said she'd talk to the store manager about it.
Also, I guess (this is 2nd hand info) told the mananger he was gay...then why would he be commenting about females *shrug*

You’re in the right, even legitimately handicapped people can’t use facilities designed for them inappropriately.
And your manager needs to have your back. Fuck the idiots.

Thanks man, mgmt has been pretty cool, and if the store manager asks Ima tell her the truth. It's all on tape if she wants proof as well.

Good, glad mgmt have been cool. Maybe I misread as it seemed like they were overplacating the customers rather than telling them to get ducked. But definitely you were in the right as far as I’m concerned.Deadbydawn wrote:showa58taro wrote:You’re in the right, even legitimately handicapped people can’t use facilities designed for them inappropriately.

You're definitely in the right.
Big box places love throwing workers under the bus because they are viewed as expendable fodder, unfortunately. Write down exactly what happened and keep a record of it, including a description of the customer (approx age, height, weight, skintone, facial hair, hair color, length of hair, hairstyle, clothing, etc) , the day and time it happened, and what your boss said to you about it directly.
Considering you were looking out for company property they should be on your side, even if they blow off the creep factor the dude was giving you (and it sucks when a boss lets a customer treat an employee like shit just cause it avoids upsetting the customer.)
Hopefully your boss has your back. If something comes up about it at work, make a copy of what you wrote down and give it to your boss.

okay, i have to ask, that's like the fourth time i've seen you post "duck" where "fuck" would be the go-to word. Is that intentional or auto-correcting?

I figured but it helps to have some insight. I do tend to shoot from the hip sometimes and overexaggerate. So it's nice to have some unbiased perspective.showa58taro wrote:Good, glad mgmt have been cool. Right esp with it being a male/female thing and with the given social climate and everything. But with the "customers always right" (thank you, sears) mentality...outta sight outta mindDream wrote:Deadbydawn wrote:SO, I'm a little confused. Sadly, that's the mentality a lot of employers have about their employees.
I had one boss who stood up for me when it didn't benefit her in any way. Other than that, unless standing up for me benefits them, it's not happening. That boss was the owner of a restaurant I was a waitress at from 15-19 off and on in Alabama. A customer kept harassing me, he was a friend of her husband's (my boss and her husband were in their 70s at the time, so this guy had to at least be in his 60s) and one day he followed me out back when I was tossing trash from the dining room, I was 16 (This happened after months of him asking me to come to his house in the middle of nowhere when his wife went out of town a few times a month to dust the place for a significantly higher rate than my boss gave me.) She essentially told him he was forbidden from coming into the restaurant again, I'm guessing I wasn't the first teen employee he harassed (and no, it wasn't Moore

Ducked is definitely just a type-O. Not even sure it’s autocorrect as much as the proximity of F andD.

your manager and the other employees should have your back. you didn't do anything wrong, that i can tell. that guy (and the other guy with him) is in the wrong, solely. hopefully it doesn't come back on you. that is a tough situation.
Re: Advice. When is okay not okay?
Everything I wanted to say has already been said in this thread.
Bottom line: Stone Cold said so You're in the right.

Re: Advice. When is okay not okay?
It's too bad there are so few real men in the world today. Those clowns should have the ever loving shit beat out of them and been thrown in the dumpster behind the store. A real man in charge would have walked up and told the guy standing on the back of the scooter to get the fuck out of the store and never come back. If he even gave a dirty look, three other male employees should have used his head to open the door. Why anyone would allow their female co-workers to be intimidated like that is beyond me.

you did the right thing
as far as making comment about women and him claiming he is gay could be legit because the goal of most gay men is to be fishy

Re: Advice. When is okay not okay?
I work in retail too. Bulk store also. Been there, done that. At ours, they like to take the carts outside in the rain, which it's electric and when electric gets wet...half the time they walk in under their own power. So what's the problem? Most of the time I just tell them to drive to the front and pick them while inside. As for your situation, you were in the right. They abused the system. They are not toys. One person only. No passengers. They break it, then it costs the company money, not them. Second, then they bitch about not having it when they broke it in the first place. No win scenario. It's frustrating. You can't sue for embarrassing someone. Empty threat. Thrown out of court and laughed at. As retail workers, we are embarrassed, ridiculed and verbally and physically abused on a daily basis. Yet we put up with it to pay the bills. So don't worry about it. If anything, management should have enforced policy and stopped them from harassing you. That is their job. Hope it gets better for you.
